For the most part, the course attempts to map out the major ideologies —Liberalism, Socialism, Conservatism, Nationalism, Anarchism, Fascism–National Socialism— as well as more contemporary ones — Feminism, Ecologism, Religious Fundamentalism. Students are expected, on the one hand, to build a fundamental body of knowledge regarding the most significant ideological currents, and, on the other hand, to develop the critical ability to recognize and evaluate ideological patterns as they manifest in contemporary political discourse.
